How does carpet beetle control work in Melbourne?
Carpet beetle control means going after the larvae, not the adults. The small beetles on your windowsill do no damage themselves; their hairy young do, feeding on wool, silk, feathers and pet hair in dark, undisturbed spots. Treatment goes into the base of the carpet pile, along the edges, under furniture and inside wardrobes, where the larvae actually feed.
Clothes moths work the same way. The moth fluttering out of the wardrobe is not the problem; the larvae spinning silk tubes in a forgotten jumper are. A proper moth treatment covers the storage areas, the carpet under beds and the edges of rugs, and comes with clear advice on the clothes themselves.
Carpet beetles Melbourne homes pick up often come from the roof, breeding in old bird nests and dead insects before dropping through the ceiling. Our handymen find that source, bag the debris and seal the vents and eave gaps. Birds in the roof? See our bird nest removal.

Carpet beetles and clothes moths in Melbourne homes
Three insects cause most fabric damage we see. Moth control Melbourne jobs and carpet beetle jobs overlap, but where we look first is different.

Webbing clothes moth
Tineola bisselliella
- How to spot it
- Small, golden buff moth under a centimetre long that runs or flutters away from light.
- The larva
- Cream grub with a brown head, spinning silk tubes and webbing as it eats.
- Where it feeds
- Stored woollens, cashmere, felt, silk, fur and the carpet under beds and wardrobes.
Varied carpet beetle
Anthrenus verbasci
- How to spot it
- Round beetle about 2 to 3 mm long, mottled brown, black and white, often on windowsills in spring.
- The larva
- Brown and cream banded grub covered in bristles, often called a woolly bear. Leaves shed skins behind.
- Where it feeds
- Carpet edges, rugs, wool underlay, pet hair, feathers, and old nests or dead insects in the roof.
Black carpet beetle
Attagenus species
- How to spot it
- Shiny black to dark brown oval beetle, slightly larger than the varied carpet beetle.
- The larva
- Golden brown, carrot shaped grub with a long tuft of hair at the tail end.
- Where it feeds
- Wool carpet, rugs, felt, stored clothing and the lint that builds up under skirting.
Signs of a carpet beetle infestation or moth infestation
You rarely see the larvae until the damage is done. Look for these.
Bare patches in the carpet
Thinning pile along edges, under beds and behind doors, where nobody walks or vacuums.
Shed skins and hairy grubs
Tiny empty brown skins in corners and drawers are a classic carpet beetle sign.
Silk tubes or webbing
Fine webbing stuck to wool or carpet fibres points to clothes moth larvae.
Beetles on the windowsill
Adult carpet beetles fly towards light in spring and early summer to get outside.
Holes in stored clothes
Small irregular holes in jumpers, scarves and suits that sat in the wardrobe all winter.
Moths that avoid light
Small moths that scuttle into dark corners when you open the wardrobe, instead of flying to the lamp.

Carpet beetle treatment starts in the roof
Adult carpet beetles live outdoors on flowers, then fly in to lay eggs. Very often they settle in the roof first, where old sparrow or starling nests, dead insects and lint give their larvae years of food. From there, larvae and adults drop through downlights and gaps in the cornice into the rooms below.
So our carpet beetle treatment includes a look in the roof void. Our handymen bag and remove old nests, dust the area where the debris sat, fit mesh over roof vents and close eave gaps so birds cannot nest there again. Inside, we seal the gaps under skirting boards where lint and pet hair pile up, because that fluff is a food supply in itself.
- Roof void checked
- Old nests bagged
- Roof vents meshed
- Eave gaps closed
- Skirting gaps sealed
- Photos of what we found
Carpet beetle pest control that deals with the source
Spraying the carpet gets the larvae you can reach. If the roof keeps feeding the house new beetles, the damage starts again.
A carpet spray and go
Treats the floor surface, then leaves.
- Light spray across the top of the pile
- Wardrobes and rug undersides skipped
- Roof void never checked
- Old bird nests left above the ceiling
- Skirting gaps full of lint left as food
Good Guys, pest control plus handyman

- Roof vents meshed and eave gaps closed by our handymen

Clothes moth treatment for wardrobes and rugs
A clothes moth treatment is only as good as the prep. Before we arrive, empty the affected wardrobes and drawers, bag the clothes, and vacuum the floor of the wardrobe and the carpet edges. We then treat the inside of the wardrobe, the drawer runners, the carpet under it, rug undersides and upholstered furniture where eggs get laid.
The clothes themselves are not sprayed. Wash woollens on the warmest setting the label allows, dry clean what you cannot wash, and put small delicate items in a sealed bag in the freezer for a week to kill eggs and larvae. Store them afterwards in sealed bags or tubs. This is the part of moth pest control Melbourne homeowners can do best themselves.
- Wardrobes emptied first
- Inside of wardrobes treated
- Drawer runners and corners
- Rug undersides
- Upholstery and curtains
- Clothes care plan

What changes the price
- Number of rooms. One wardrobe is a short job; a whole house of wool carpet takes longer.
- Rugs and furniture. Large rugs and upholstered lounges each need handling and treating.
- Roof void work. Bagging old nests and debris depends on how much is up there.
- Sealing and mesh. Meshing a few vents is quick; many eave gaps take longer.
- Which insect. Carpet beetles spread through the house more than moths, so they often need more rooms treated.
- Access. Two storey roofs and cramped roof voids need more time and gear.
Is carpet beetle and moth treatment safe for my home?
What you can expect on the day, and what happens if the larvae come back.
Treating carpets and wardrobes carefully
We use registered products at label rates, applied to carpets, edges and the inside of storage, not to your clothes.
People and pets stay out of treated rooms until the surfaces are dry, usually two to four hours. We tell you before we start if any fabric should be moved.
The re service guarantee
Carpet beetle and moth treatments come with a written re service guarantee.
If the larvae return within the period written on your job sheet, and the aftercare was followed, we come back and re treat at no charge.

Your carpet beetle and moth questions
Damage, prep, clothes and the roof. If yours is not here, ring us.
How much does carpet beetle control cost?
It is a free quote. The price depends on how many rooms, rugs and wardrobes are involved and whether the roof needs nests removed and vents sealed. You approve it before we start.
How do I get rid of carpet beetles myself?
To get rid of carpet beetles you have to find the larvae: vacuum edges and under furniture hard, wash or freeze affected fabric and clear lint from skirting gaps. If they keep turning up, the source is usually in the roof or under the floor, and that is where a treatment helps.
Are the beetles on my windowsill a problem?
They are a sign. Adults do no damage, but each one that got inside may have laid eggs in your carpet or wardrobe first.
Do carpet beetles bite?
No. The bristles on the larvae can irritate sensitive skin and cause a rash that looks like bites, which is where the confusion comes from.
Will you spray my clothes?
No. We treat the wardrobe, drawers and carpet. The clothes are washed, dry cleaned or frozen, and we explain how.
How long does a moth infestation take to clear?
Larvae that contact the treatment die off over the following days. Eggs hatching later meet the treated surfaces. Expect a few adults for a couple of weeks.
Do you treat pantry moths too?
Pantry moths live in flour, rice and cereal rather than fabric, so the fix is mostly clearing the pantry. Ask us and we will talk you through it or treat it with a general pest control visit.
Why check the roof for a carpet problem?
Old bird nests, dead insects and lint in the roof feed carpet beetles for years. If that supply stays, new beetles keep dropping into the house.
Can you save a valuable rug?
We treat the rug and the floor under it and tell you honestly about the damage. Badly chewed rugs may need a specialist rug cleaner or repairer as well.
Do silverfish damage fabric too?
They graze on cotton, paper and starch rather than wool. If that sounds more like it, see our silverfish treatment.
Can you come today?
We answer 24/7 and book around you, weekends included. Most carpet beetle jobs are booked a day or two ahead so you have time to prepare.
