How does fly control in Melbourne work?
Fly control in Melbourne starts with one question: where are they breeding? Every fly in the house hatched from a maggot somewhere nearby, usually in a bin, a drain, compost, pet droppings or a dead animal. Spray kills the adults you can see, but new ones keep hatching until the source is gone. We find it, deal with it, treat where the flies rest and repair the screens and gaps they fly through.
In warm Melbourne weather a house fly can go from egg to adult in about a week, so a missed source brings the problem straight back. That is why our fly treatment always starts with a walk around the bins, drains and garden, and a look in the roof void when big flies appear indoors with no obvious reason.

House flies, blowflies and drain flies
Each fly breeds somewhere different, so knowing which one you have tells us where to look.

House fly
Musca domestica
- How to spot it
- Grey, about 6 to 7 mm, with four dark stripes on its back.
- Where it breeds
- Bins, compost, pet droppings, lawn clippings and any damp rotting waste.
- What we do
- House fly control starts at the bins and waste areas, then the walls and eaves where they rest.

Blowflies
Calliphora and Lucilia species
- How to spot it
- Bigger and louder, with a shiny metallic blue or green body.
- Where it breeds
- Meat scraps in bins, and dead rats, birds or possums in roofs and walls.
- What we do
- Find the meat or the body, remove it, treat the spot and seal the gap.
Drain flies
Moth flies, Psychodidae
- How to spot it
- Tiny, grey and fuzzy, like a very small moth, resting on bathroom walls.
- Where it breeds
- In the slimy film inside slow drains, floor wastes and unused showers.
- What we do
- Treat the drain lining where the larvae live, and flag drains that need a plumber.
Small brown flies around the fruit bowl are vinegar flies, the ones most people call fruit flies. Fruit fly control inside a home is mostly about finding the soft fruit, wet bin liner or sticky drain they breed in.

Maggots in bins, on floors or through the ceiling
Maggots are fly larvae, and they only appear where there is food for them, which is why maggot pest control is really about finding that food. Maggots in bin liners are almost always from meat, fish or nappies that sat in a warm wheelie bin for a few days. Blowflies lay eggs through the smallest gap under the lid and they hatch within a day in summer. Our maggot treatment for bins includes the bin surround and enclosure, and we show you how to keep it from happening again: wrap meat scraps, keep them in the freezer until bin night and hose the bin out after it is emptied.
Maggots crawling across a floor or dropping from a light fitting are different. That usually means a rat, bird or possum has died in the roof, wall or under the floor. Killing the maggots does nothing while the body is still there. Our dead animal removal team finds it, takes it out, treats the spot for odour, and our handymen seal the hole it got in through.
- Bins and bin enclosures treated
- Roof void and sub floor checked
- Carcass found and removed
- Maggot removal from floors and ceilings
- Odour treated
- Entry hole sealed
Big blowflies or maggots inside? Something may have died in the roof.
Do not just spray and wait. More will keep coming until the body is found. We answer 24/7 and treat this as urgent.
Six places we check before any fly treatment
Most homes have one main source and one or two small ones. Finding all of them is the difference between a quiet summer and a repeat visit.
Wheelie bins and bin areas
Food scraps, meat and nappies in warm bins. The number one source for house flies and blowflies.
Drains and floor wastes
The slime inside slow drains feeds drain flies. Unused showers and laundry floor wastes are common culprits.
Compost and garden waste
Open compost, grass clippings and rotting fruit under trees breed house flies in large numbers.
Pet and animal areas
Dog droppings in the yard, chook pens and litter trays are ideal for fly larvae.
Roof voids and wall cavities
A dead rat, possum or bird brings blowflies inside through gaps in the ceiling.
Kitchens and pantries
Soft fruit, spilt juice and wet bin liners are what vinegar flies need to breed.
Fly pest control that does not stop at the spray can
Flies are one of the few pests where the repair matters as much as the treatment. They fly straight in through any gap you leave open.
A spray only visit
Knocks down the flies you can see, then leaves.
- Sprays the rooms without looking for the source
- Misses the dead rat in the roof void
- Leaves the torn flyscreen on the back door
- Ignores the loose grate on the floor waste
- Leaves the gap under the door
Good Guys, pest control plus handyman
Finds the source, treats it and repairs the way in.
- Breeding source found first, in bins, drains, compost or the roof
- Resting spots treated on eaves, walls and window frames
- Flyscreens re meshed and new spline fitted where torn
- Door seals and brush strips fitted to close gaps under doors
- Drain covers and grates refitted or replaced

How we keep flies out once the source is gone
The fastest way to get rid of flies through the warm months is to stop them getting inside. We re mesh torn flyscreens, replace perished spline and rollers on sliding screens, and fit new seals and brush strips where daylight shows under doors. Gaps around window frames and where pipes pass through the wall are sealed.
For drain flies, a loose or missing floor waste grate lets them come and go. We refit or replace grates and covers, and if a drain is cracked or blocked we tell you so a plumber can fix it. In the same way, a gap in the eaves that lets a rat into the roof is sealed, because a dead rat up there is where the next blowflies come from. Our rodent control crew can handle the rats themselves.
- Flyscreens re meshed
- Sliding screen rollers replaced
- Door seals and brush strips
- Floor waste grates refitted
- Pipe gaps sealed
- Priced before we start

What changes the price
- Where the source is. A bin enclosure is quick. A carcass deep in a wall cavity takes more time.
- Access. Low roof pitch, a tight sub floor or a double storey ceiling can add time.
- Size of the property. Larger yards, animal pens and compost areas take longer to treat.
- How many screens. Each flyscreen, seal and grate is counted in the quote.
- Home or business. Cafe bin rooms and commercial kitchens are quoted separately.
Are flies and maggots a health risk, and what does the guarantee cover?
What people most often ask us about fly and maggot jobs.
Health and hygiene
Flies land on rubbish and droppings, then on food and benches, and can carry the germs that cause food poisoning.
Maggots themselves do not bite, but where they come from is not something to leave in the house.
The re service guarantee
The guarantee period for the treatment is written on your job sheet.
If flies come back in numbers from the same source within that period, we come back and re treat at no charge.
Fly and maggot control questions
Maggots, drains, bins and prices. If yours is not here, ring us.
How much does fly control cost in Melbourne?
It depends on what is causing the flies. A bin area and a drain are a short job; a dead animal in the roof takes longer. We give you a free quote in writing before any work starts.
Why do I suddenly have maggots inside the house?
A sudden outbreak indoors, often with big blue or green flies, nearly always means an animal has died in the roof, a wall or under the floor. The maggots come down through gaps in the ceiling or skirting. The body has to be found and removed.
How do I stop maggots in my bin?
Wrap meat and fish scraps, keep them in the freezer until bin night, keep the lid shut and hose the bin out after collection. In hot weather a lid that does not close properly is enough for blowflies to get in.
What are the tiny fuzzy flies in my bathroom?
Those are drain flies. They breed in the slime inside drains, especially in showers or floor wastes that are not used often. Treating the drain lining and refitting the grate is what stops them.
Can I just use fly spray?
Fly spray kills the ones in the room. If they are hatching from a bin, drain or carcass, more will keep coming until the source is dealt with.
How long does a fly treatment last?
With the source gone and the screens fixed, most homes stay quiet. How long depends on bins, pets and neighbours. Your job sheet shows the guarantee period.
Do you treat blowflies around farms, pens or chook yards?
Yes, in Melbourne and the suburbs. Animal areas need a regular clean of droppings too, and we explain what helps between visits.
Do you do fly control for cafes and restaurants?
Yes. For food businesses in the city see our CBD pest control page, which covers bin rooms and service reports.
Can you repair my flyscreens without a pest treatment?
Yes. Our handymen re mesh screens, replace rollers and fit door seals as a job on their own, quoted before we start.
Is the treatment safe around kids and pets?
We use registered products by the label, keep them away from food areas and tell you how long to keep kids and pets off treated surfaces.
