Why a handyman for ants?

Ants follow the same crack along the slab or the same weep hole every day. After the colony is treated, closing those routes means the next colony has a harder time finding your kitchen.

  • How fast does it work?Non repellent products work over days as the ants share them. Most trails fade within a week or two.
  • Should I spray the trail? Please do not. Surface sprays scatter the ants and can split the colony into more nests.

Quick answer

How does ant control in Melbourne work?

Ant control in Melbourne works by treating the colony, not the ants you can see. The workers on your bench are a small fraction of the nest, and the queens never leave it. We use a non repellent treatment and baits that the workers cannot detect, so they carry the active ingredient back and share it through the nest over the following days.

Then we close the routes. We are handymen as well as pest technicians, so we seal the crack along the slab edge, the gap where the hot water pipe enters the wall and the loose window frame the trail runs through, and treat any weep hole the trail runs into. Ants that lose their easy route have to travel across treated ground to get in.

White ants are termites, a completely different insect that eats timber. They are not covered by ant treatment. If we see signs of termites while we are there, we tell you straight away.

Ants in house

Ants in house kitchens and bathrooms: where they come from

Ants in house kitchens are almost always foraging workers from a nest somewhere else: inside a wall cavity, under the slab, beneath the pavers outside the back door or in a pot plant. They come in for sugar, grease and water, and lay a scent trail so the rest of the colony can follow.

Our first job is to follow that trail. We track it from the bench or the bathroom back to where it enters, usually a window frame, a gap behind the splashback, a crack along the skirting or a weep hole, and then outside to the nest. An ant infestation Melbourne homes see coming from everywhere is often one or two large colonies using several entry points.

Knowing where the trail enters matters twice: it tells us where to place the treatment, and it shows our handymen what to seal afterwards.

Know your ant

Four ants we treat in Melbourne homes

Each species nests and feeds differently, so the bait and the treatment are matched to the ant, not just sprayed at every ant the same way.

Black house ants
Most kitchen trails

Black house ant

Ochetellus glaber

How to spot it
Tiny, about 2.5 to 3 mm, shiny black, moving in neat single file trails.
Where it nests
Wall cavities, under floors, window frames, around hot water units and in pot plants.
What we do
Sweet gel bait on the trail, non repellent treatment at the entry, gaps sealed.
Coastal brown ants

Coastal brown ant

Pheidole megacephala

How to spot it
Small and brown, with some larger workers that have oversized heads.
Where it nests
Under pavers and along slab edges, pushing up little piles of sand and soil.
What we do
Granular bait and non repellent treatment along paths, edges and garden beds.
Argentine ants

Argentine ant

Linepithema humile

How to spot it
Small, light to mid brown, in wide busy trails up walls and trees.
Where it nests
Many linked nests with many queens, in soil, mulch, walls and under pots.
What we do
A property wide plan, with bait types changed as their food choices shift.
Bull ant

Bull ant

Myrmecia species

How to spot it
Large, often 15 mm or more, with long jaws and a painful sting.
Where it nests
Mounds in lawns, garden beds and bush edges, not usually inside.
What we do
Nest treated directly, carefully, especially near play areas and paths.

Sizes are typical worker lengths. We confirm the species on site before treating.

Ants on the bench? Do not spray the trail.

Surface sprays kill the ants on the bench but can split the colony into several new nests, which makes ant control harder. Wipe up the food, leave the trail and call us.

Ant exterminator, done differently

An ant exterminator who also closes the gaps

Spraying the trail makes the kitchen look clear for a day. Treating the colony and sealing the route is what makes a difference.

A spray and go visit

Kills the ants in sight and leaves.

  • Repellent spray across the trail
  • Ants detour and nests can split
  • No search for the nest outside
  • Cracks and weep holes left as they were
  • Trails back after the next warm spell

Good Guys ant control plus handyman

Treats the colony, then fixes the way in.

  • Non repellent treatment the ants carry back to the nest
  • Baits matched to sugar or protein feeding species
  • Slab edge and wall cracks sealed where the trail enters
  • Weep holes treated, never blocked, so the wall still drains
  • Door and window strips replaced where ants walk under them

Ant pest control plus repairs

Sealing the cracks and gaps ants use

Ants need very little room. A hairline crack where the slab meets the brickwork, a gap around a tap or pipe, or a window frame that has pulled away from the render is plenty. After treatment, our crew seals those gaps with a flexible sealant that moves with the house rather than cracking.

Weep holes are the other common route. They sit at the bottom of brick walls to let water drain out and air through, so they must never be filled with mortar or foam, which can cause damp problems. A mesh cover will not stop ants either, because they walk straight through it. So where a trail runs into a weep hole, we treat inside it with a non repellent product the ants carry back to the nest.

We also replace worn door bottom seals and window weather strips where ants walk underneath. Anything bigger is quoted before we start.

  • Slab and brick cracks
  • Pipe and tap gaps
  • Window frame gaps
  • Weep holes treated
  • Door bottom seals
  • Extras quoted first

Get rid of ants

Why it is hard to get rid of ants yourself

Most people who call us have already tried the supermarket spray. These are the reasons it did not last.

The queens stay home

Only workers come inside. Kill a hundred on the bench and the queens keep laying in the nest.

Sprays can split colonies

Some species respond to a repellent spray by budding into several smaller nests.

The wrong bait

Some ants want sugar, others want protein, and it changes with the season. A bait they ignore does nothing.

Hidden nests

Nests in wall cavities and under slabs are out of reach of anything you can buy off the shelf.

Water draws them in

Dripping taps, wet cupboards and leaking pipes keep bringing ants back to the same room.

The gap is still open

Even after a good treatment, an open crack lets the next colony straight in.

Confirmed in writing before any work

Every job is quoted individually. Tell us what you are seeing and we give you a price in writing before any work starts.

What changes the price

  1. Species. Argentine and coastal brown ants usually need a wider, property wide treatment.
  2. Number of nests. One nest by the back door is quicker than nests under every path.
  3. Size of the property. Bigger yards, paving and garden beds take more time and product.
  4. Access. Sub floors, wall voids and roof spaces add time.
  5. Sealing work. Crack sealing, pipe gaps and door seals are priced per item.
  6. Return visit. Some heavy problems need a second treatment, which we tell you up front.
Common questions

Your ant control questions

Species, timing, preparation and cost. Ring us if yours is not here.

Call 0478 661 110
How much does ant control cost?

It depends on the species, the number of nests and the size of the property. We give you a free quote in writing before any work starts, including any sealing work.

How long does ant treatment take to work?

Non repellent products and baits work over several days as the workers share them through the nest. Most trails fade within one to two weeks. Seeing ants on the treated areas in the first few days is normal and means they are picking it up.

Should I spray the ants before you arrive?

No. Surface sprays can scatter the trail and hide where the ants are coming from. Wipe up food and leave the trail so we can follow it.

Why do ants come inside?

Food, water and shelter. Hot weather sends them looking for water and rain can flood nests, which is why trails often appear after a change in the weather.

Can you seal my weep holes to stop ants?

No, and nobody should. Weep holes let the wall drain and breathe, and a mesh cover does not stop ants because they walk straight through it. We treat inside the weep hole instead, so ants using it carry the product back to the nest.

Are bull ants dangerous?

Bull ant stings are very painful. People with an allergy to ant stings can have a serious reaction; call 000 straight away if someone has trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat. For advice after a sting, call the Victorian Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

Are white ants the same as ants?

No. White ants are termites, which eat timber and need a separate inspection and treatment. Ant treatment does not cover termites.

Do I need to leave the house?

Usually not. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until dry. The technician tells you the times for your home on the day.

Can ants be treated in a general spray?

Yes. Our general pest control visit includes ants along with spiders, cockroaches and silverfish. A dedicated ant visit goes further when ants are the main problem.

Do you also treat cockroaches?

Yes. Kitchens with ants often have cockroaches too. See our cockroach control service.

Before and after

Preparing for ant treatment, and the guarantee

Simple steps help the treatment work, and the job sheet tells you what is covered afterwards.

Before and after the visit

Wipe up sugary spills and store food sealed, so the bait is the best food on offer. Leave the trails for us to follow.

Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until dry, and do not hose the outside walls or mop along the skirting for a few days.

Fix dripping taps where you can. Water keeps drawing ants back to the same room.

The written re-service guarantee

Ant treatments come with a written re-service guarantee, with the period written on your job sheet.

If the treated ants come back inside that period, we return and re treat at no charge.
