How does cockroach control in Melbourne work?
Cockroach control in Melbourne works when the treatment reaches the places cockroaches live, not just the floor where you see them. We identify the species, put gel bait and an insect growth regulator into the hinges, cracks and appliance gaps they shelter in, and treat drains, wet areas and the sub floor where the bigger outdoor species come from.
That is what cockroach removal really takes. Then we do the part most companies skip. We are handymen too, so we seal the gaps around sink and dishwasher pipes, refit loose kickboards and close the cracks along benchtops and splashbacks. A cockroach that loses its hiding spot has to come out into the open, where the bait and the residual treatment are waiting.
A light problem in a house is usually one visit. A heavy German cockroach infestation in a busy kitchen can need a second visit two to three weeks later to catch the young that hatch from egg cases. If yours needs that, the quote says so from the start.

Signs of a cockroach infestation in your home
Cockroaches hide by day, so by the time a cockroach infestation Melbourne homeowners notice shows up in daylight, there are usually many more behind the cupboards.
Running when the light goes on
Roaches scattering from the bench or sink at night is the classic sign of a kitchen population.
Pepper like droppings
Tiny black specks in hinge corners, drawer runners and along the top of the fridge seal.
Brown egg cases
Small brown capsules the size of a grain of rice, tucked behind appliances and in cupboard corners.
Seen in the daytime
Daytime sightings often mean the hiding spots are crowded and the problem is well established.
A stale, oily smell
A heavy infestation has a sour smell that is strongest under the sink and in the pantry.
Shed skins in corners
Pale, papery cockroach skins behind the microwave or in the back of a cupboard.
German cockroach control and the other Melbourne species
The species decides the plan. German cockroach treatment means detailed baiting in the kitchen; outdoor roaches need the drains, garden and entry points treated.

German cockroach
Blattella germanica
- How to spot it
- Small, about 12 to 15 mm, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head.
- Where it lives
- Inside: fridge and dishwasher motors, cupboard hinges, behind the oven and splashback.
- What we do
- Gel bait and growth regulator in every harbourage, a follow up if heavy, gaps sealed.

American cockroach
Periplaneta americana
- How to spot it
- The largest, up to about 40 mm, shiny reddish brown with a pale band behind the head.
- Where it lives
- Drains, sewer pits, sub floors and roof voids, coming up into bathrooms and laundries.
- What we do
- Treat drains, sub floor and roof void, and seal gaps around floor wastes and pipes.

Australian cockroach
Periplaneta australasiae
- How to spot it
- Large and reddish brown, with bright yellow edges on the front wings and a yellow ring behind the head.
- Where it lives
- Outdoors in mulch, garden beds and woodpiles, moving inside in hot, dry weather.
- What we do
- Perimeter and garden edge treatment, plus door strips and weep hole covers.

Oriental cockroach
Blatta orientalis
- How to spot it
- Dark brown to almost black, about 25 mm, slow moving with short wings.
- Where it lives
- Cool, damp places: drains, laundries, sub floors and under paving.
- What we do
- Dust and spray in damp areas and drains, and we point out leaks that keep them coming.
Sizes are typical adult lengths. We confirm the species on site before treating.
A cockroach exterminator who also fixes the gaps
Most cockroach problems come back because the hiding spots are still there. Here is the difference a roach exterminator with handyman skills makes.
A typical spray visit
Sprays the floor and skirting and leaves.
- Sprays open surfaces where roaches rarely sit
- Spray can repel roaches away from any bait
- No check for egg cases or harbourage
- Gaps behind the sink and cupboards left open
- No follow up for eggs that hatch later
Good Guys cockroach control plus handyman
Treats where they breed, then closes it off.
- Gel bait and growth regulator placed inside hinges and appliance gaps
- Kickboards and cupboard backs checked and refitted
- Pipe penetrations sealed under sinks and behind washing machines
- Door weather strips fitted so outdoor roaches stay outside
- Follow up visit quoted up front when a heavy German infestation needs one

What goes into our cockroach treatment
Gel bait is the backbone of German cockroach control. It is placed in small dots inside hinges, along the back edges of drawers, behind the fridge and dishwasher and in the gaps around the oven. Cockroaches feed on it and return to their hiding spots, where other roaches are exposed too. Because the gel sits in cracks rather than on shelves, you do not need to empty your cupboards.
We add an insect growth regulator, known as an IGR. It does not knock adults down; it stops young cockroaches from growing into breeding adults, which is what breaks the cycle. For drains, wet areas, the sub floor and the roof void, where the larger species travel, we use a residual cockroach spray or dust in the cracks and voids rather than across open floors.
One tip: do not use a fly spray or surface cockroach spray near the bait after we leave. It can put roaches off the bait and slow the whole treatment down.
- Gel bait in hinges and gaps
- Insect growth regulator
- Drain and floor waste treatment
- Sub floor and roof void
- Wet areas and laundry
- Bait products rotated

Sealing the gaps cockroaches hide in
To get rid of cockroaches and keep numbers down, the kitchen itself has to stop sheltering them. German cockroaches squeeze into gaps as thin as a coin, so the space where the waste pipe goes through the back of the sink cupboard, the crack between the benchtop and the splashback, and the void behind a loose kickboard are all perfect homes.
Our crew seals those pipe penetrations with the right sealant, refits or refixes kickboards and cupboard backs, and closes cracks along benches and tiled splashbacks. For outdoor species, we fit door bottom seals and weather strips on back and laundry doors, and check floor waste grates and drain covers in bathrooms and laundries.
Anything larger, such as a water damaged cupboard base or a leaking pipe that needs a plumber, is pointed out and quoted or referred, so you can decide.
- Pipe gaps under sinks
- Benchtop and splashback cracks
- Loose kickboards refitted
- Door seals and weather strips
- Floor waste grates checked
- Extras quoted first

What changes the price

- How established it is. A heavy population can need a second visit two to three weeks later.
- Size of the home. More kitchens, bathrooms and a sub floor take more time.
- Appliances. Pulling out and treating around built in appliances adds time.
- Sealing work. Pipe gaps, kickboards and door seals are priced per item before we start.
- Business kitchens. Cafes and food businesses get a service report, quoted to the site.
Getting ready for cockroach treatment, and the guarantee
A few simple steps help the bait work, and the job sheet tells you what is covered afterwards.
Before and after the visit
Clear the cupboard under the sink and wipe up crumbs and grease, so the bait is the best food on offer. You do not need to empty other cupboards.
Keep children and pets away from treated areas until any spray has dried. The technician tells you the times for your home on the day.
Do not spray or clean over the gel dots. Seeing more roaches for a few days is normal as they come out of hiding to feed.
The written re-service guarantee
Cockroach treatments come with a written re-service guarantee, with the period written on your job sheet.
If cockroaches come back inside that period, we return and re treat at no charge. Keeping food sealed and leaks fixed helps the result last.
Your cockroach control questions
Species, preparation, timing and cost. Ring us if yours is not here.
How much does cockroach control cost?
It depends on the species, the size of the home and how established the cockroaches are. We give you a free quote in writing before any work starts, including any follow up visit and sealing work.
Why do cockroaches keep coming back after I spray?
A shop bought cockroach spray only reaches the roaches it touches. Most of the population, and the egg cases, stay deep in hinges and appliance gaps. Gel bait and a growth regulator reach those hiding spots, and sealing the gaps takes some of them away.
Do I need to empty my kitchen cupboards?
No. The bait goes into hinges, corners and gaps, not onto shelves. Clear the cupboard under the sink so we can reach the pipes.
Why am I seeing more cockroaches after the treatment?
For a few days after baiting, roaches come out to feed on the bait and to escape treated voids. That is expected. If you still see many after two weeks, call us.
How long until they are under control?
Most homes see a clear drop within a week. A heavy German cockroach infestation usually takes a few weeks and often a second visit to catch the young from egg cases.
What is an insect growth regulator?
An IGR stops young cockroaches from developing into adults that can breed. It works alongside the bait and is a key part of German cockroach control.
Which cockroach do I have?
Small and light brown with two stripes, living in the kitchen: German. Big, reddish and near drains: American. Yellow edged wings, coming in from the garden: Australian. Dark, slow and in damp areas: Oriental. Our species guide has more detail.
Can you seal the gaps they come through?
Yes. We seal pipe penetrations, refit kickboards, close cracks along benches and splashbacks, and fit door seals and weather strips. Each item is priced before we start.
Do you do cockroach fumigation?
Not whole house fogging. Cockroach fumigation with a fogger drifts across open surfaces while the roaches stay deep in hinges and appliance gaps. Gel bait and a growth regulator go into those gaps instead, and you do not have to leave the house for hours.
Do you treat restaurants and cafes?
Yes. Commercial cockroach control for food businesses includes a treatment plan and a service report. See our CBD pest control page for apartments, strata and commercial kitchens.
Can I get cockroaches treated as part of a general spray?
Yes. Our general pest control visit includes cockroach baiting along with spiders, ants and silverfish. A dedicated cockroach visit goes deeper where roaches are the main problem.
