Why Melbourne Homes Need Professional Spider Control

Whole-Property Spider Treatment & Protection

Why Melbourne Homes Need Professional Spider Control

Melbourne is home to some of Australia’s most venomous spiders. Redback bites can cause severe pain, nausea, and in vulnerable individuals, serious medical emergencies. White-tail bites, while rarely dangerous, are notorious for causing necrotic skin reactions. The problem is not just the spiders you can see — it’s the ones hiding in your eaves, roof void, garden furniture, and behind stored items in the garage that pose the real risk, especially for children and pets who are lower to the ground.

A can of surface spray treats the spider in front of you. It does nothing for the dozens living in your gutters, eaves, and roof void. At Good Guys Pest Control, we treat your entire property — from roof cavity to fenceline — using commercial-grade residual spray and insecticidal dust that continues working for months after we leave. Melbourne’s peak spider season runs from late summer through autumn, but a professional treatment provides protection well beyond any single season.

Our 3-Step Spider Eradication Process

1. Property Inspection

We systematically inspect your home inside and out — roof void, eaves, gutters, fencelines, garden beds, sheds, and sub-floor. We identify the spider species present, locate web sites and nesting zones, and assess how spiders are entering the property before any product is applied.

2. Targeted Residual Treatment

We apply commercial-grade synthetic pyrethroid spray to eaves, cornices, skirting boards, window frames, fencelines, and the external perimeter. Insecticidal dust is blown through the roof void and into wall cavities where spiders breed. Webs are treated directly before being cleared, ensuring the active ingredient reaches any egg sacs present.

3. Handyman Exclusion & Prevention

Unlike standard pest controllers, we are also licensed handymen. We seal the gaps in eaves, broken weatherstripping, and cracks around window frames that spiders use to move between outside and inside — cutting off access routes that keep bringing them back season after season.

The Melbourne Spider Species We Eradicate

The Melbourne Spider Species We Eradicate

Melbourne is home to a number of spider species ranging from genuinely dangerous to simply unwanted. Knowing which species you have determines exactly how and where we treat.

Redback spider on web

Redback Spider

One of Australia's most venomous spiders and a genuine danger to children and pets. Redbacks are small, glossy black with a distinctive red or orange stripe on the abdomen. They build messy, sticky webs in dry, sheltered spots — under outdoor furniture, around pot plants, in letterboxes, behind retaining walls, and under eaves. They rarely move far from their web, so where you see one, there are almost certainly more nearby.

Our Solution: We target Redback harbourage zones with direct residual spray, treating every eave, ledge, retaining wall gap, and garden structure around your property boundary. Any visible webs and egg sacs are treated before removal.

White-tail Spider

Slender, dark grey-brown with a distinctive white tip on the abdomen. White-tails are nomadic hunters — they don't build webs and instead roam at night preying on other spiders. This makes them particularly hard to control with surface sprays because they rarely rest on treated surfaces long enough for standard products to work. They commonly hide inside folded clothing, towels, and bedding — which is when bites most often occur.

Our Solution: Because White-tails hunt other spiders, the most effective strategy is eliminating their food source. Our full-property residual treatment removes the web-spinning spider populations White-tails feed on, driving them out. We also treat the roof void and internal skirting boards where they most commonly travel.

Huntsman spider indoors

Huntsman Spider

Large, fast, and alarming — Huntsman spiders cause significant distress despite being relatively harmless to healthy adults. They are also nomadic hunters that do not spin webs and are commonly found behind wall hangings, curtains, under furniture, and in the roof void. Their speed and size make an unexpected encounter genuinely frightening, particularly for children.

Our Solution: Residual treatment of the roof void, internal cornices, and wall perimeters combined with external eave and fenceline spraying to reduce the insect populations Huntsman rely on for food and to create a chemical barrier they are reluctant to cross.

Black House Spider

Dark, robust, and responsible for the funnel-shaped webs that collect in window corners, brick crevices, door frames, and gutters. Black House Spiders are the most visible species in Melbourne homes and their webs accumulate rapidly. While not dangerously venomous, their bite is painful and can cause localised swelling and nausea.

Our Solution: Direct treatment of web sites around window frames, brick crevices, eaves, gutters, and downpipes. These spiders return to the same web repeatedly, so residual spray applied to their established harbourage zones is highly effective.

Note: Funnel Web Spiders are an extremely dangerous species requiring immediate professional attention. If you suspect Funnel Web activity on your property, do not attempt to handle or disturb the spider. Call us immediately for an urgent inspection.

What's Included In Our Spider Treatment?

What's Included In Our Spider Treatment?

We leave nothing to chance. A standard Good Guys Spider Treatment covers your entire property — every zone where spiders live, breed, and enter.

Indoor spider treatment around windows and ceilings

Inside The Home

Roof Void Dusting

Insecticidal dust blown deep into the roof cavity where spiders and silverfish breed. The roof void is one of the most active spider zones in the home and the most frequently skipped by DIY treatments.

Skirting Boards & Internal Cornices

A targeted residual barrier spray applied along all internal skirting boards and cornices to intercept nomadic spiders moving through living areas at night.

Window Frames & Door Frames

Treatment of all internal window and door frame recesses where Black House Spiders establish webs and Redbacks occasionally shelter in cooler months.

Sub-floor Treatment

If your home has a sub-floor, we treat it with insecticidal dust and spray. Sub-floors are ideal spider habitat — dark, undisturbed, and close to garden-level entry points.

Spider control on eaves and exterior of home

Outside The Home

Eaves, Gutters & Downpipes

Thorough spray treatment of all overhangs, gutters, and downpipe brackets — the primary nesting zone for Redbacks and webbing spiders across Melbourne properties.

Perimeter Barrier Spray

A heavy residual chemical wash applied to all external walls, window ledges, foundations, and pathways — creating a lasting barrier that stops spiders walking in from the garden.

Sheds, Fencelines & Garden Structures

We spray all outbuildings, retaining walls, fences, and garden structures within your property boundary. Outdoor storage areas are among the most common Redback harbourage zones in Melbourne.

Entry Point Sealing

As licensed handymen, we physically seal gaps in eaves, cracks around window frames, and broken weatherstripping that spiders use to move between outside and inside — a step no standard pest controller offers.

Spider Control FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

Spider Control FAQ

We recommend staying out of treated areas while the spray is wet — typically around 20 minutes. Once dry, the home is completely safe to move through normally. Pets and children can re-enter treated areas as soon as the product has dried.
Yes — and it’s actually a good sign. Spiders that were not directly sprayed during the treatment will continue moving across treated surfaces and will die as they pick up the residual chemical. You may see increased activity for up to four weeks as the treatment takes full effect.
No — please leave webs in place before we arrive. We treat the webs directly during the inspection, ensuring the active ingredient reaches any egg sacs attached to them. Once treated, we clear the webs as part of the service. Removing them beforehand reduces the effectiveness of the treatment.
In most cases, a single treatment provides effective spider control for six to twelve months. The exact duration depends on local conditions — properties with heavy garden cover, external lighting that attracts insects, and high-moisture environments will see more spider pressure and may benefit from treatment every six months.
White-tails and Huntsman are nomadic hunters without fixed webs, which makes them harder to contact directly. Our approach targets their food source — web-spinning spiders — as well as treating the surfaces and voids they travel through. This significantly reduces their presence and activity inside the home over the weeks following treatment.
Late summer through autumn (February to May) is peak spider season in Melbourne. Spiders are actively searching for mates and food, and are most likely to push inside as temperatures start to cool. Booking a treatment heading into this period gives your home maximum protection through the busiest months.
Yes. Sheds, garages, and all outbuildings within your property boundary are included as standard. These are actually some of the most active Redback zones on any Melbourne property and should never be left untreated. Call 0478 661 110 to arrange your booking.
